The Ceylon Electricity Board, that currently enjoys a monopoly in the electricity sector estimates growth in the consumption to be approximately 8%.annually in the next five to ten years requiring an additional 120-150 MW annually to meet this demand. Hence it is evident that there is an exponential growth in the electricity demand in the country that will require to be supplied by a mix of Hydro, Thermal and other means. This deficit of more than 150 MW per year has not been met in the recent years and the long gestation period required for coal power plants, considered the viable option by the CEB, would mean that there is an unfulfilled demand to be met by power plants which can be commissioned in a short time. Dendro Power using Sustainably Grown Fuel wood would meet this requirement eminently.
In consideration of the above background which high lights a growing demand for electricity which is not seen to be satisfied by the current plans of the state institutions and the fact that use of imported fossil fuels is not viable nor advisable from a national perspective, now in first time we are planning to start a programme to make strong rural economy through the plantation of Gliricidia and power generation from Gliricidia in Sri Lanka. The company is planning and discussing with the government of Sri Lanka, to get the lands from rural areas such as given bellow to cultivate this crop. Anuradhapura, Buttalla, Ampara, Matale, Embilipitiya, Puttalam, Ratnapura those are the areas, the company have decided to develop from the plantation in the future.
It is proposed to establish a Dendro Power Plant of capacity 30 MW at suitable locations. The actual requirements and proposals for the supply chain is company own and each 5MW Power Plant can make 2500 families as for employees for its wood supply. We will arrange to get the land from the government and plantation will be handling by the company.
