The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) organised a delegation of 45 local entrepreneurs to participate in the HKTDC World SME Expo last week.

A Macau Pavilion was set up with the exhibition booths of two local enterprises showcasing their products and services.

The Macau delegation attended the opening ceremony followed by a visit to the Macau Pavilion. The Pavilion, which covered 36 square metres, aimed to introduce Macau’s current business environment, IPIM’s services as well as to promote the 2009 Macau International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (MIECF) and the 14th Macau International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF).

The Yeng Kee Food Co. Ltd and the Macao SME Association also set up exhibition booths in the Pavilion to promote their products and services to both local and overseas business visitors.

In addition, the Macau delegation visited a number of pavilions and participated in several seminars to strengthen communication and liaison skills with attending business visitors.

The local entrepreneurs attended the seminars including Industries Meeting Symposia, New SMEs Corner, SME Forum, SME Service Presentation, and also New Market Opportunities.

A delegation member said that the participation in the Expo helped further strengthen communications with SMEs and relevant international organisations, which had a “positive impact” on the market exploration for Macau SMEs.

The HKTDC Inno Design Tech Expo which held in conjunction with the Word SMES Expo, aimed at generating more intelligence and insights, attracting more valuable ideas through the showcase of innovative designs, new product presentation and seminars, thus enhance companies’ competitiveness.

Regarding business negotiations between enterprises, some overseas firms inquired about the procedures for setting up offices in Macau and information on business matching.

A number of overseas enterprises had also expressed their intention of participating in the 2009 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (MIECF).

Local enterprises said that the event provided them with the opportunity to conduct business negotiations with participants from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

Over the years, IPIM has been working to provide a variety of services and assistance to support local SMEs.

In the view of the current unstable economic outlook and international financial meltdown, IPIM said they would continue to develop a number of projects to support local SMEs seeking business opportunities, such as organising them to participate in exhibitions by providing subsidies and organising business matching sessions to look for business partners.

Moreover, IPIM also organises local SMEs to participate in several large-scale exhibitions in neighbouring regions such as Guangzhou and Hong Kong every year.

The HKTDC World SME Expo was organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) with business opportunities in new markets as the focus of this year’s event.

Participants included private and public enterprises and public organisations, global business and trade promotion organisations, consulate generals, chambers of commerce, international trade organisations and SME promotion organisations with the common aim of assisting SMEs to explore markets and seeking appropriate business partners.

This year’s HKTDC World SME Expo was comprised of two main exhibition areas, namely the Business Solution Halls and the Opportunities Hall, and more than 100 seminars were held during the event.

Members of the delegation included the Macau Small and Medium Enterprises Association, Industrial Association of Macau, Macau Chinese Enterprises Association, Macao Convention and Exhibition Association, Macao General Association of Real Estate, and the Macau Youth Entrepreneur Association.
